The Calhoun Woman’s Club is thrilled to announce that the 28th Sequoyah Ball will be held on Saturday, October 22nd at 6:30 pm. Since 1988, the CWC has raised over $772,000 for different agencies and institutions in Calhoun and Gordon County. Additionally, we have provided annual scholarships for graduates of our local high schools. This tradition could never be achieved or continued without the support of the community and our business partners. We are proud to be a part of a strong community of volunteers who work to make our hometown a good place for families and businesses to thrive.
The 2022 Sequoyah Ball will be held at 209 on Wall Street (also known as the Fox-Ford building) and will include hors d’oeuvres at 6:30, a silent and live auction, dinner, and live music provided by the Dexter Thomas Band and featuring local artist India Galyean.
This year’s Sequoyah Ball is being held to benefit the Voluntary Action Center. The VAC opened in 1971 and has since provided emergency services to low-income individuals and families, focusing on hunger and homeless relief. “Serving as the heart of service in Gordon County, we strive to provide volunteer opportunities that offer a wide variety of emergency resources for our neighbors in need” is the mission upheld by the VAC. It is important to note that all donations to the VAC remain in Gordon County to help people in need here in our community. Some of the ways that the VAC currently supports Calhoun and Gordon County are through their:
- Community Kitchen, which serves a hot lunch daily Monday through Friday
- Food Pantry
- The Bridge Program, which provides emergency shelter to families who are homeless
- Emergency Financial Assistance to help prevent eviction and loss of utility services
- Showers and Laundry facilities
- Operation Happy Christmas, which provides toys and clothing to low-income families
- Senior Christmas Program, which provides meal and gift boxes to low-income senior adults
With the funds raised by Sequoyah Ball 2022, the VAC intends to finish expanding the community kitchen and complete dinner meal service additions. In 2021, 15,230 hot meals were served by the Community Kitchen for lunch to senior adults, the homeless, and those who struggle to make ends meet. The impetus for adding an additional meal is the children in our community who may receive lunch at school but do not have the means for any kind of dinner in the evenings with their families. The CWC wants to help the VAC in realizing the vision of providing a hot dinner to families in need. When you support the VAC, you not only support the prevention of hunger and homelessness, but you help us work toward a good quality of life for everyone in our community. Won’t you partner with us?
